SHANGHAI — Jiahui International Hospital welcomes Dr. Gamaliel VENTO Franco as Assistant Director of the Emergency Department and a family medicine physician. Dr. Vento brings a rare combination of international disaster relief experience, advanced critical care skills, and fluency in six languages to one of Shanghai's leading international emergency departments.

Life-and-Death Decisions Under Pressure

Many life-saving procedures carry inherent risk. Dr. Vento emphasizes the constant balance between risk and benefit, weighing each intervention's impact on survival and recovery. Repeated practice builds hand-brain coordination, allowing clinical judgment to become reflexive.

He has also worked extensively in resource-limited settings, where full textbook protocols are not always available. That experience, he says, sharpens clinical ability: when you later work in a well-resourced hospital, you bring greater confidence and adaptability.

Medical Transport: From Conflict Zones to Oil Rigs

Dr. Vento's career has spanned diverse transport and coordination settings:

• Field & helicopter transport — emergency response to remote traffic accidents.
• Inter-hospital transfer — moving patients to facilities with specialist equipment, surgeons, or ICU capacity.
• Offshore oil platform medicine — medical care on offshore rigs in the Australian region, where even minor injuries require air evacuation.
• Organ transplant logistics — long-distance transport of donor organs and recipients.

He has also worked in Guatemala on the Pacific coast for emergency and disaster relief and participated in three long-term United Nations refugee relief missions in conflict-affected Timor-Leste.

Language as a Bridge to Trust

A native Spanish speaker, Dr. Vento also speaks French, Italian, English, Portuguese, and Tetum, the local language of Timor-Leste. He believes language quickly removes fear and builds trust.

"Medical devices and lab reports cannot communicate with people. Communication is the core of our work. A good history alone can make many diagnoses; you don't always need extensive tests or imaging. Good communication also eases patient anxiety."

About Dr. Vento

Dr. Vento earned his medical degree in Havana and completed specialist training in family and community medicine. He then pursued advanced specialty training in emergency and critical care medicine, followed by master's degrees in public health and epidemiology, clinical and medical management, and an MBA focused on small and medium enterprise management.

His clinical capabilities include advanced critical care techniques such as mechanical ventilation, VV/VA ECMO, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), trauma resuscitation, and ground and air medical transport. He has held roles as ICU and medical evacuation coordinator, chief medical officer, and has been active in clinical pathway development, multidisciplinary collaboration, and quality improvement.

He is certified in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), T-BOSIET, and OGUK offshore medical standards.

Jiahui's Emergency Department is staffed by an international team of physicians and nurses capable of rapid diagnosis and treatment for acute conditions such as headache, syncope, altered consciousness, pain, edema, dyspnea, cough, vomiting, diarrhea, hemoptysis/hematochezia, jaundice, abnormal urination, vaginal bleeding, and trauma.

The department has 17 single-patient consultation rooms and offers short-term observation and infusion services. When specialist consultation is needed, Jiahui International Hospital specialists can promptly attend the emergency department, arrange surgery, or admit the patient. Jiahui Emergency also maintains close coordination with multiple Shanghai tertiary hospitals for timely external consultation and referral of critically ill patients.
